The U.S. Army, Gay Porn and Murder

When a soldier puts on the uniform of the United States Army, he or she is wrapping the symbol of our nation around themselves. How solders conduct themselves as soldiers is paramount to everything Americans are.  The way in which our military judges the actions of our troops both in and out of combat zones determines the message that is being sent to everyone.  If the United States Army is going to be the judge of troop morality then it needs to be put into perspective. The command structure needs to first judge themselves.

It seems that the United States Army, an organization which I have been a part of and believe in, may be so corrupted that it has no leadership that is both capable and moral enough to protect the interests of the United States from itself.  The leadership have sworn to protect the Constitution of the United States from enemies "both foreign and domestic." One might think that these words would be enough for Army Officers to take a look at what is happening to their beloved military organization and take a stand.  After all, these are strong men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line for the "mission."  Maybe they have not realized that the first mission that they are obligated to are is the one that they were given when they raised their hand and swore the oath.  If there is a conflict in that oath, they must look into their hearts and souls to determine the thing that is right and honorable to do.

What is becoming obvious to anyone who can see the larger picture is that while it has been determined to be 'honorable' to murder an enemy combatant in the name of "obtaining valuable intelligence" it is an absolute dishonor  for soldiers to be in represented in gay pornography. The idea that these two ideas may be at two different poles of the concept of military honor is exactly the point. Porn may not be nice, and it certainly may not contribute to the quality of military discipline or the appropriate image of the U.S. Army but it also is not representative of a complete breakdown of the objectives of a military force in combat.  In modern society sex is simply sex. It sells and it generally doesn't hurt anyone who is not already willing to enjoy it. Murder on the other hand is harmful to both the person that is murdered, his or her family as well as to the mission levied upon every single soldier in harms way.

The moment that Chief Warrent Officer Lewis E. Welshofer Jr. was convicted of simple negligent homicide for the murder of a valuable prisoner, Maj. Gen Abed Hamed Mowhoush during an interrogation in which he had unsuccessfully used water torture the military jury in Colorado sent a message about the individual American soldier's sense of honor and duty. The fact that this soldier will be given a sentence of just three years is a travesty to everything that American soldiers should stand for.  Not only was the murder of an unarmed and bound prisoner a horrendous act, the fact that the prisoner had information which could have saved hundreds if not thousands of lives means that his death was synonymous with the existence of the thousands of Americans who have now come home in body bags.

The thing is that we simply don't know how many soldiers lives might have been saved if Welshofer had simply seen fit to to do his duty instead of becoming the torturer and murderous thug. To add insult to injury, Chief Warrant Officer Jefferson L. Williams and Spec. Jerry L. Loper had charges completely dropped because they testified against Welshofer.   Sgt. 1st Class William Sommer who also had murder charges dropped will at least have a possible administrative punishment. Each and every one of these individuals were bound by their oath and by the Uniform Code of Military Justice to stop the atrocity that was committed but they simply didn't do their most basic moral duty.  All of these men will have to live with what they have done.

May God help America and this world in which our President orders otherwise good people to invade and occupy if our United States Army Generals can not distinguish the difference between right and wrong. All of this simply puts into the perspective the fact that at least some of the propaganda that our enemy has been saying is correct.

Soldiers obviously are torn between their moral and ethical duty and the work that they must carry out in their military obligations.  But before they are soldiers Americans also have a duty to choose when it is moral and right to fight for their country and therefore when to enlist. Sometimes it takes true courage to hear the ring of truth and reality and make the sacrifice of saying no to the majority about what is going on. Knowing what is happening, who in their right mind would want to enlist in such an Army with leadership we have today?
